A Few of My Favorite Places – Saggio di Vino

I thought I’d like to show you all some of my favorite places in Christchurch. This way I can support businesses that support me and if you’re a tourist, hopefully show you some places that you should visit during your stay.

Today I would like to tell you all about our lovely neighbors Saggio di Vino. Last night my lovely fiance Juliet took me out for a birthday dinner at Saggios. It is the first time I have been to the restaurant since it has reopened and I must say I was massively impressed. The food was top-notch, the service incredible, the decor lovely and (something that bugs me about a lot of restaurants) the acoustics perfect.

Being (much) higher-end than Smash Palace, it is not the sort of pace I could afford to dine at all the time, but I do like places that represent a special occasion, where you can dine on food that is much nicer than your daily fare.

Before the earthquakes, Saggio di Vino spent many happy years on the site we now occupy. After the building came down they eventually moved in next door and have been doing a roaring trade since they first opened their doors.

I have a soft spot for restaurants or bars that represent the personality of a quirky, hands-on owner. I think in the world of mass-produced franchising, one person’s passion always shines through and proves to be more “real” than anything that is replicated and represents little more to an owner than numbers on a page.

So, well done to Lisa and Yommi for running such a cracking establishment with such passion. If you feel like a special night out be sure to call them and make a booking.

A quick story to finish on. When we first opened, the ever colourful Lisa came over and ran her critical eye over our drinks list. Smiling, she looked up and said: “You have shit wine and good beer, we have shit beer and good wine. I think we are going to get along just fine as neighbors.”
